Operating Instructions for the P-40N-20



1).PRELIMINARY CHECK 
  a).Obtain flight clearance. 
  b).Check outside of airplane. 
  c).Check controls. 
2).ENTER COCKPIT 
  a).Ignition switch off. 
  b).Landing gear handle control neutral. 
  c).Flap control handle neutral. 
  d).Parking brake on. 
  e).Check form 1. 
  f).Adjust shoulder straps and belt. 
  g).Check controls for freedom of movement. 
  h).Oil and coolant shutters full open. 
  i).Fuel selector on fuselage tank. 
  j).Carburetor heat full COLD. 
  k).Rudder tab 2-3 right, elevator tabs in Take-off position. 
  l).Check that modifier on quadrant is in full retarded position. 
  m).Propeller in AUTOMATIC position. 
3).STARTING AND STOPPING THE ENGINE 
  a).Refer to Section II 
4).TAXIING 
  a).Prolonged idling of the engine under 1000 RPM must be avoided. 
  b).Taxi slowly and use brakes lightly as the P-40 noses over easily. 
5).ENGINE WARM UP 
  a).Mixture control in AUTO-RICH and propeller in AUTOMATIC position. 
  b).Idle engine first at 1000 RPM until a steady oil pressure is obtained. 
  c).Engine speed should then be increased to 1400 RPM and running continued until the 
     temperature of the oil inlet is at least 15&degC and that of the coolant reaches 60&degC. 
6).BEFORE TAKE-OFF 
  a).Modifier on quadrant fully retarded. 
  b).Increase RPM to 2300 and place propeller in fixed pitch. 
  c).Check magnetos. 
  d).Check propeller (refer to Section III). 
  e).Return propeller to AUTOMATIC. 
  f).Fuel boost pump ON. 
  g).Check oil and coolant temperatures. 
  h).Tighten throttle lock. 
  i).Check that wing flaps are up. 
7).USE OF POWER 
  a).With 100 octane fuel and POWER CONTROL (N-20)  MP RPM Mixture Control 
     Take-off 45" Full High Auto Rich 
     
     Climb (33")* 2350 Auto Rich 
     
     Cruise (27")* 2100 Auto Rich 

* The MP may vary with the respective RPM settings. 

  b).With 100 octane fuel and quadrant prop control.  MP RPM Mixture Control 
     
     Take-off 45" Full High Auto Rich 

     Climb 35" 2600 Auto Rich 

     Cruise 27" 2280 Auto Rich 

8).USE OF FUEL TANKS 
  a).When filled with 100 octane only. 
    1).Start, Taxi, Take-off -- FUSELAGE (vented tank). Burn all but 35 gals. from fuselage. 
    2).Cruise -- BELLY and then to WINGS. 
    3).Land -- FUSELAGE. 
  b).When filled with both 91 and 100 octane. 
    1).Start and Taxi -- FUSELAGE (91) (vented tank) 
    2).Take-off -- WINGS (100) 
    3).Climb and Cruise -- FUSELAGE (91) 
    4).Cruise -- BELLY (91) 
    5).Land -- WINGS (100) 
9).NORMAL GEAR AND FLAP PROCEDURE 
  a).To operate gear or flaps, select desired position with hydraulic selector handle, depress trigger 
     switch on control stick to actuate electric hydraulic pump. For gear check indicators, pump auxiliary hand pump until firm, 
     return selector handle neutral for positive lock, and check that gear warning light does not burn when engine is throttled below 1000 RPM. 
     Do NOT operate both flaps and gear together. 

10).AUXILIARY AND EMERGENCY FLAP AND GEAR PROCEDURE 
    a).If the hydraulic electric pump fails to extend the flaps and gear, manually pump them down with the auxiliary hand pump. 
       Place Selector Valve in desired position and pump with hand pump. Return handle to neutral. Do NOT operate both gear and flaps simultaneously. 
    b).If the electric hydraulic pump and the auxiliary hand pump both fail on the F or K models, the landing gear can be lowered by transferring 
       the pump handle from the auxiliary hand pump to the emergency hand pump. Open both left and right shut-off valves. 
       The landing gear can be lowered with the selector valve in any position. The tail wheel will not lower with the operation of the emergency hand pump. LAND TAIL HIGH. 
       There is no emergency hydraulic system on the N. The emergency system will not operate flaps or raise the gear. 
11).EMERGENCY PILOT EXIT 
    a).Pull the emergency release handle on the top forward frame of the cockpit enclosure and the entire canopy will be torn off by the slip stream. 
    b).After a turn over on the ground, pull the release handle located on the left lower canopy frame (inboard) to unlock
       the emergency exit frame. Slide frame aft with release handle until the kick-out panel on the left side of the canopy can also be opened from the outside by pulling out the 
       handle on the lower frame (painted red) and pushing back until the panel locks are disengaged. 
12).BEFORE LANDING 
    a).Fuel selector on FUSELAGE TANK. 
    b).Mixture control AUTO RICH. 
    c).Carburetor air full COLD position. 
    d).Propeller in AUTOMATIC position. 
    e).Lower gear at not over 175 IAS. 
    f).Lower flaps at not over 140 IAS. 
    g).NOTE: Return landing gear and flap control levers to neutral after completion. The flaps will creep up if selector is not in neutral (positive lock). 

13).AFTER LANDING 
    a)Do not make turn until airplane is slowed to safe taxi speed. 
    b).Wing flaps up and oil shutters open. 
    c).Use brakes with caution.
